Students study and work at large wooden tables inside a bright, spacious academic building with high ceilings and white architectural columns. Laptops, notebooks, and water bottles are spread across the tables as students read, type, and collaborate. Large chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and upper-level balconies overlook the study area. A sign reading “Casey Commons” is visible on the right above an entryway.

Stay Informed Through the UGA Counselor Portal

UGA’s Counselor Portal gives school counselors a streamlined way to support their students. You can upload required documents, track application progress, and view admissions decisions in real time. The portal also shows whether students have received scholarships or been admitted to the Honors College.

You can use the portal to nominate students for special programs, including the Georgia Certificate of Merit and UGA’s Valedictorian/Salutatorian Guarantee during designated periods of the year.

Answers to the Questions You Ask Most

We appreciate the important role you play in guiding future Bulldogs, and we’re committed to giving you the tools and information you need to confidently share the University of Georgia with your students. Below is a collection of frequently asked questions created specifically for high school counselors.

Application Process & Deadlines

What are UGA’s application deadlines for First-Year admission?

UGA’s application deadlines remain consistent each year. You can view the current Early Action and Regular Decision deadlines on our First-Year Admissions page.

What was the academic profile for last year’s accepted First-Year class?

The most recent academic profile is available on our First-Year Student Profile page. This includes admitted student averages, ranges, and other key data to support your advising.

Required Documents & Recommendations

Where can I find the secondary school report and teacher recommendation forms?

All First-Year applicants must have a secondary school report submitted through the Common App or UGA Counselor Portal. One teacher recommendation is optional but encouraged.

Is a counselor letter of recommendation required?

A narrative recommendation letter from a counselor is not required. A narrative letter may serve in place of the required secondary school report if needed. Students are not penalized if a narrative counselor letter is not submitted.

How can I submit first-year applicant transcripts?

Most high schools submit transcripts through:

  • Common App
  • GAfutures.org (Georgia high schools)
  • Naviance
  • Parchment
  • Scoir

If your school does not use these systems, you may upload a PDF transcript through the UGA Counselor Portal or email it to [email protected].

Self-Reported Grades & Academic Preparation

How can I help students with the self‑reported grades section?

Students should enter their grades as accurately as possible. UGA uses these self‑reported grades as an initial reference point, and all entries are verified against the official transcript once received. A detailed self-reported grade resource is available and can be shared directly with applicants.

Does UGA prefer AP/IB coursework or Dual Enrollment?

Both AP/IB as well as dual enrollment courses are forms of rigor. However, we hope that a student will first maximize their high school experience before moving to dual enrollment.

What are the core academic requirements for admission?

The state-mandated Required High School Curriculum (RHSC) includes:

  • 4 English courses
  • 4 Mathematics courses
  • 4 Science courses*
  • 3 Social Science courses
  • 2 Foreign Language courses (same language)

UGA recommends students pursue the most rigorous coursework appropriate for their preparation. Strong academic grades and curriculum strength are key factors in first-year admission decisions.

*We recognize that some private and out-of-state schools require fewer than four science courses. We are flexible in evaluating these students. Acceptable courses are listed in the USG Staying on Course document.

Checking Application Status

Can I check the status of a student’s application?

Yes. Counselors can monitor students’ application progress through the UGA Counselor Portal.

What are the required materials for a first-year applicant?

Early Action & Regular Decision Requirements:

  • Application (including short essays)
  • Application Fee or Fee Waiver
  • Official High School Transcript
  • Official SAT/ACT scores (sent electronically by the testing agency)
  • Secondary School Report
  • Optional Teacher Recommendation
