UGA Wait List Frequently Asked Questions
How is the waiting list established?
More students apply to the University of Georgia than can be accommodated in our classes and residence halls. Unfortunately, each year many students must be denied admission. There are other students, however, that we are confident would be successful here and we would be pleased to admit if space became available. These students are offered a place on the waiting list.
Now that I have the option of being placed on the waiting list, what do I do next?
If you would like to reserve a place on the waiting list, and there is a good possibility that you would accept admission to UGA if offered in May or June, then visit the Web site we have developed to manage our Waiting List as soon as possible (but no later than May 1). Students will have the choice to be considered for admission for either Fall 2014 or Spring 2015. We will keep on the waiting list only those people who indicate their intentions via this Web site.
Students who choose to accept a place on the waiting list will select one of the following term options: (1) Consideration for Fall 2014 only or (2) Consideration for Fall 2014 OR Spring 2015. Students who accept to a place on the waiting list for Fall 2014 only will not be given the option to be given consideration for Spring 2015 admission.
If you have made a final decision to attend another college, please visit the Web site to decline your spot on the waiting list. Once you indicate your preference, you will receive a confirmation from our office. We cannot accept this information via telephone.
How many people are currently on the waiting list?
We will not know the exact number until after May 1. In 2012 close to 700 students chose to remain on the waiting list. In 2013, there were 810 students who requested to remain on the waiting list.
Can you give me an idea of how many students will eventually be accepted off the waiting list this year?
We try to make an accurate prediction of how many students will accept our offers of admission, but we have to wait until after May 1 for the actual deposits to arrive. By May 15 we expect to determine if spaces are available and how many students can be admitted off the waiting list. That could be as many as 500, but we might not be able to admit any students off the waiting list. We simply do not know at this time.
Is the waiting list ranked?
No. The waiting list is not numbered or ranked. Around May 15 we will know how many spaces (if any) will be left in the Class of 2018. If we utilize the waiting list, we will review all the applications of those students who have reserved a place on the waiting list via the Web site to select the most qualified students and determine the order in which offers of admission will be made. Our selections will be made in an attempt to round out the class with regard to all the academic and personal talents and qualities we have reviewed.
May I send supplementary material?
No. Because of the volume of transfer applications currently being processed in our office, we are unable to accept additional transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, telephone calls or emails on your behalf. Your file has already been evaluated and reviewed based on the application materials and supporting documents submitted by our January 15 application deadline for Regular Decision.
Which term should I select?
Because we are unable to predict how many students will be offered admission from the Waiting List, we encourage students to consider this choice carefully. If you choose ONLY to be considered for Fall 2014, you WILL NOT be considered for any other term.
If I am admitted off of the Waiting List for Spring Semester 2015, can I enroll at another institution for Fall 2015?
Yes. Students admitted from the Waiting List for Spring 2015 may enroll at any accredited institution for the Fall Semester 2014. These students will receive information during the Fall regarding their transition to UGA in January 2015. Students may choose not to enroll in a post-secondary institution during the Fall and instead utilize this time to work, travel or volunteer.
Should I deposit at another college?
Yes. If required by the institution of your choosing, you should send your deposit to another college or university to secure your space, in case UGA is unable to offer you admission. If you are accepted off our waiting list, please know that you will be asked to pay a non-refundable commitment deposit to UGA within one week of admission. At that time, you should also notify the institution at which you have deposited that your intentions have changed, as they also may have students on a waiting list.
If I am admitted, how will I be notified?
We will attempt to phone all students who are to be accepted off the waiting list; and if a student is still interested, we will send an acceptance letter.
When will I be notified if I am accepted?
You will be notified as soon as possible, but likely no earlier than May 15. We will not know how many students have sent a deposit until that date. We anticipate that most students accepted off the waiting list (if any) will be notified between May 15 and June 15. Once the class is fully enrolled, all students remaining on the waiting list will be notified by letter no later than July 1 that we will not be offering admission to any more students.
Will there be any financial aid for students accepted off the waiting list?
If admitted, students who have completed the financial aid application process will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to review an Estimated Early Award.
If I am accepted, will I receive housing?
We expect to house all first-year students on campus, as our housing policy requires. Assignments to first-choice halls and roommates may not be possible with limited space. Students admitted from the Waiting List for Spring 2015 will also be given the opportunity to live on campus.
