Confirmation of your reservation for the Summer Semester First-Year Orientation session will be posted on the Application Status Check Web page. Do not make travel arrangements until you have received an assignment to an Orientation session. In addition to the status check on the Web confirming your Orientation assignment, a confirmation letter will be mailed six days prior to your assigned session.


Check in & Parking

You should report directly to Brumby Residence Hall at the corner of Baxter Street and Church Street on the morning of your scheduled Orientation session.  Please plan to arrive at Brumby Residence Hall between 8:00 and 8:15 a.m.

Directions to Tate Student Center:  Click here for directions to Athens and Exit #7 on the Athens Perimeter / Loop10.  From Exit #7, turn onto College Station Road (traveling from North and East turn right  /  traveling from West and South turn left).  Turn right at the third traffic light onto East Campus Road.  Then turn left at the next light onto Carlton Street.  Travel to the third light on Carlton Street and take a right onto Lumpkin Street.  At the third traffic light on Lumpkin Street, turn left onto Baxter Street.  Take the next right onto Hull Street and park in the Hull Street Parking Deck.  The Tate Student Center is a short walk across Lumpkin Street from the Hull Street Parking Deck.  You will receive a parking permit at check-in.

Parking:  Parking is available in UGA parking lots W10 (located behind Brumby Residence Hall) and W08 (located across Church Street from Brumby Residence Hall). Parking is also available at the Hull Street Parking Deck on Hull Street, one block west of the intersection of Lumpkin and Baxter streets. Only one permit will be issued per student.


What you will need at Orientation

The weather in Athens during the summer is HOT and humid. However, the meeting rooms can be cool. Appropriate and comfortable clothing is recommended. Participants will walk to most meetings, so comfortable shoes are a must! You might appreciate having an umbrella at hand.

Bring $15 to pay for your UGACard student ID.

Bring an additional $15 if you plan to take the optional foreign language placement test. (See testing explanation below.)

No other payments – such as tuition, room, and board – are due at Orientation.

Testing

All students will register for fall semester classes after having their first academic advising appointment at Orientation. To assure that new students are placed in the correct level of certain core courses, students are prohibited from registering until they’ve completed required placement tests. Other than those exempted from testing based on advanced credits through AP, SAT II, or college joint-enrollment, all incoming First-Year students will be required to take a math placement test, and a majority of new students will be required to take the English placement test. Some students will be required to take a reading comprehension test.

Create your UGA MyID

All UGA students must create a “MyID” e-mail account in order to be able to register for classes. You can create your UGA MyID online now.

Orientation Checklist

  • Be sure to check our Application Status Check Web Page for the proper dates of your scheduled Orientation session, for immunization flags, and for any additional testing requirements.
  • Create your UGA MyID account. Select the “Students” link in the “Request a MyID” section of that page for instructions. You will not be able to register for classes at Orientation without a UGA MyID account.
  • Orientation fees will automatically be charged to your UGA Student Account within three business days after you register for Orientation. You will need to pay the Orientation fee charge on your Student Account prior to attending your Orientation session. To pay your Student Account balance online, go to the Student Accounts System page. In order to access your Student Account, you will need to have created your UGA MyID.
  • Mail the Mandatory Immunization History form to the University Health Center at least two weeks prior to your Orientation session. This will ensure that you are permitted to register for your classes while at Orientation.
  • You must complete the required online alcohol course. This requirement applies to all First-Year and transfer students who have not turned 23 by the last day of drop/add for undergraduate courses. Your registration eligibility will be flagged if you do not complete this course prior to the beginning of classes.
  • Before attending Orientation, review and complete the UGA Advising Worksheet so that you will be prepared for your first advising appointment. It’s okay to be undecided about your major. If you want to change your intended major, you can inquire about how to do that at Orientation.
  • Review the list of tips created by UGA’s academic advisors to help you prepare for your first advising appointment at Orientation.
  • Meet the twelve student Orientation Leaders who will be introducing you to life at UGA when you arrive at Orientation this summer.
  • Take a look at the amazing array of student life opportunities, resources and services available on this campus. Browse the list of more than 450 student organizations, learn about your new home town, Athens, GA, and brush up on your knowledge of UGA and its history.
  • The University of Georgia is committed to providing access for people with disabilities. If you are a person with a disability and require assistive devices, services, or other accommodations to participate in Orientation, contact the Orientation office at (706) 542-9127 prior to your assigned Orientation session. Contact the UGA Disability Resource Center for information on registering for accommodations throughout the academic year.

Incoming students should also be aware of these important steps that should be completed prior to enrollment:

  • Check your Financial Aid Status online. Also, in order to ensure that aid is awarded in time for enrollment, students should be aware of the Financial Aid deadlines.
  • Review and become familiar with the University of Georgia Student Code of Conduct.
  • If you are planning to have a car on campus, you may register online for a UGA parking permit as early as mid-April and before mid-July.
  • Purchase a 7-day or 5-day meal plan for access to the award-winning UGA Food Services program.
  • Submit a UGA Housing application. Even if you are not sure you will ultimately enroll at UGA, you can apply for UGA Housing. Applying for Housing does not obligate you to enroll. All new First-Years, with limited exceptions, must live on campus in their first year at UGA. Transfer students are also welcome to apply for on-campus housing.
