Residency for In-State Tuition Purposes
The following general descriptions are by no means all-inclusive, nor do they supercede existing
regulations concerning in-state residency. This information should only be used only as an explanatory guide for
Georgia residency. Detailed official guidelines are listed in the
UGA Bulletin, the
codes of the University System of Georgia,
and on the UGA registrar's Web site.
Since the University of Georgia is a state-supported institution, students must show
documented proof of residency and the duration of their residency in order to qualify for
in-state tuition. Following admission to UGA, students who are classified as non-residents prior to their enrollment
may apply for in-state residency by completing the Petition for Classification as an In-State
Student form, which is available on the UGA registrar's Web site. On the menu,
click on the "forms" link then choose "petition for classficiation as an in-state student for tuition purposes,
" or "Tuition Differential Waiver for Dependent Students moving to Georgia."
Separated Family Situations
>
If a student lives outside Georgia and a parent is a Georgia resident, it is
sometimes possible for the student to be considered a Georgia resident for tuition purposes.
The parent must document that he or she has lived in Georgia for the twelve
month period prior to the student's enrollment.
State of Georgia HOPE Scholarship Situations
>
Residency decisions and qualifications surrounding the state-sponsored HOPE
scholarship program are made by the Georgia Student Finance
Commission and the HOPE program. Any questions regarding the HOPE scholarship should
be directed towards these programs specifically.
