Finances & Cost

Commitment Deposit

A non-refundable commitment deposit of $200 is required by the postmark deadline of May 1 to secure a place in the first-year class. Applying for Housing does NOT secure a place in the class. Please submit your check to the UGA Bursar's Office using the envelope included in your admissions packet. This $200 will be applied to tuition and other expenses when you enroll for classes.

Cost of Attendance

Check out the details on the cost of attending UGA for one year. Do not forget that you will be paying not only tuition; you will also need to consider fees for living on-campus (a requirement for first-year students) and dining fees if you select a meal plan. Office of Student Financial Aid has cost of attendance table that you can review.

Residency

The question you can ask yourself is not, "How do I become a resident?"; but "am I a Georgia resident?" The first place to confirm residency is in the acceptance letter. A student may request to change his or her residency status from "non-resident" to "resident" by petitioning the Office of Admission. Please visit the Registrar's Office Web site to learn more about residency policies and to download a petition. As decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, please be sure to include any and all pertinent documentation and information with your petition.

Also, if you are a permanent resident of the United States, please be sure the Office of Admissions receives a copy of your "green card" so we may assess your residency appropriately.

Scholarships

The Office of Admissions considers all students whose admissions applications are complete by December 15th of their Senior year for the Charter Scholarship.

The Charter provides $1,000 per year and is renewable for 3 additional years. Each scholarship also includes a full or partial waiver of non-resident tuition for non-residents of Georgia valued at almost $16,000. Charters are awarded by the first week in April. No separate applications for the scholarships are required.

Student Financial Aid

The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) provides students with Federal grants, loans, and work-study benefits and serves as a clearinghouse for major or college-specific scholarships for upperclassmen students. Information and forms for the HOPE scholarship and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are available online. There is also a helpful bulletin in the "Student Bulletin" section on the FastWeb site that gives tips and suggestions on filling out the FAFSA form. You may also find FastWeb a helpful tool for finding other scholarships and hints on how to approach the process of financing an education.
