Highlights at the University

Bernard Ramsey Scholar and a Center for Undergraduate Research (CURO) Apprentice. Given the title of Hollowell CURO Apprentice – an honor that I am proud of because it bears the name of Donald Hollowell, who led the legal team that successfully fought to integrate UGA in 1961. Named a Black Faculty and Student Organization (BFSO) Scholar and an Alpha Phi Alpha Larry Leroy Golden Scholar. Through the CURO Apprentice program, he works under professors Lance Wells and Michael Tiemeyer in UGA’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center. Analyzes the function of the glycan O-GlcNAc in the Drosophila Nervous System. Planned events for the Myers Community through the Myers Community Council, and served as the administrative chair. Ambassador for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and also represent and promote the Honors Program as an Honors Ambassador. A Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PSLSAMP) scholar as well as a UGA Accidental (the UGA all-male a cappella group).Volunteers with the Mercy Health Center, Bulldog Outreach to the Nursing and Elderly (BONE) and the Tate Society.

Questions

Why did you choose UGA?

Because of the CURO Apprentices program and the experience my brother had. When I learned that the University of Georgia offered a program that allowed undergraduates to research with acclaimed doctors and professors at an early stage, I jumped at the chance to attend UGA. For I knew that no other institution had a program as developed and established as the CURO Apprentice program here at UGA. I also chose to attend UGA because of my brother’s experience. Throughout his years here, my brother continuously talked about how great the university was. Now that I am here, I see what he saw. The friends I have made and the faculty I have come in contact with at UGA have become like a family to me.

My favorite things to do on campus are

Hanging out at Snelling Dining Commons. Anyone can find me there either eating General Mill’s Cinnamon Toast Crunch or talking with Mrs. Sandra Patterson, the beloved cashier. I enjoy playing racquetball at the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities, too. I also love to sit on the Myer’s quad or play tennis at the Intramural Fields. Both are relaxing antidotes to the fatigue caused by many hours of studying.

My favorite place to study

Either the Myers lobby or the Myers Quad. I get too distracted in my room.

What is student life like at UGA?

Exciting. There is always something to do either on or off of campus. It is just up to you to find it.

My favorite Professor is

Pamela Kleiber. She has continuously helped me since I came to UGA. She constantly checks up on me and looks out for my well being. She also gives me sound advice and profound wisdom on my academic career. In class, Dr. Kleiber challenges me to become a better writer and supplies me with useful methods to enhance my skills. She also encourages the apprentices and me to expand our minds by taking a serious look at the issues of today’s world. I am grateful and thankful for all her help.

After graduation I plan on

Attending medical school on an M.D. /Ph.D. track. I want to be able to treat individual patients while researching cancerous cells.

What I like best about UGA is

The balance it offers. At UGA, I am offered a valuable education and research experience, as well as an array of extra-curricular activities that includes watching a great football team.

The UGA experience I will always remember is

Meeting Mrs. Louise Hollowell. I received the chance to meet her during the hanging of the portraits of Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes, the first African American students enrolled at UGA, in the academic building which now bears their name. To be in the presence of someone who is known for her benevolent legacy and tireless fight for civil rights was inspiring to say the least.
